GDL Spotlight: Jasmine English

Announcement

MIT doctoral student and GDL affiliate, Jasmine English, is conducting research on politics, religion, and diversity. Her dissertation, “Dilemmas of Accommodation: Diversity and Local Church Involvement in Politics,” uncovers the dilemmas that accompany congregational diversity, and explains how churches respond to these dilemmas in ways that constrain their political potential. English argues that the pressures of congregational diversity—the pressure to appeal to a range of experiences, for instance, and the pressure to avoid the prioritization of subgroups—can lead churches away from the facilitation of political action and deliberation across difference. She combines ethnographic and statistical analyses to develop and test her core claims.
